Pico Water District Board incumbents Rick Mercado Sr. and Robert A. Martinez have decided not to run for re-election Nov. 8.
Instead, three newcomers are looking to fill the two seats.
“I’ve been in the business for a lot of years,” said Mercado, 77. “I’ve decided let someone else do the job.”
He has worked for Pico Rivera the past 29 years as a building inspector, planning commissioner, and councilman.
Mercado served one term on the City Council, having been elected in 1990, the same year he retired as a building inspector.
He was elected to his lone term on the Pico Water District board in 2007.
“I am really proud of the work we got done during my time,” said Mercado, a Pico Rivera resident since 1961.
